Feel it to heal it.
I utilize a mindful-somatic approach to trauma to support clients in connecting with a felt sense of calm and sensations in the body - the place from where trauma processing and healing can safely be explored.
My name is Courtney Howard and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CMHC) in Salt Lake City, Utah.
As a therapist, I will invite you to get curious! What needs in your life are and are not being met? What are your strengths, joys, and resources? What are your challenges, pains, and growth edges? What are you focusing on? What are you avoiding? We all avoid certain things, feelings, thoughts, or sensations and therapy is a brave journey of exploring and spending time with the parts of ourselves that we like as well as the parts we might avoid… the parts that feel uncomfortable, scared, angry, sad, lonely, confused, or overwhelmed.
Emotions and physical sensations can provide important information when we can learn to move towards them instead of away.
Why ‘Rose, bud, and thorn’? Us humans tend to have a ‘negativity bias’, meaning we focus on what is not going well (thorns) much more than what is going well (roses, buds). Life is a rose - thorns, buds and all - and an enjoyable life unfolds when we can compassionately accept and allow space for all of it.
My approach to therapy is grounded in mindful-somatic approaches to trauma, self-compassion, and EMDR therapy. The foundation of this work is mindfulness. The first step of my work is getting to know you and starting to develop trust through understanding and empathy. The next step is focused on supporting you to build the capacity, self-confidence, and skills needed so to cultivate experiences of calm and safety for yourself, inside and outside of the therapy office. From there, you will have created the base camp from which we can move together into the wilderness of processing trauma, uncomfortable emotions, limiting beliefs, and anxiety.
If this resonates with you, I might be an effective fit for you as a therapist!

I provide virtual and in-person psychotherapy to individuals in the state of Utah. I do not provide couples counseling at this time. I will consider providing therapy for a teen or child if the minor wants to attend therapy and all involved parents are concurrently in their own individual therapy.
